Karen Gilat grew up in Connecticut.  On stage quite early, she entertained at her
Mother’s brunches, directed neighborhood kids in original plays she wrote, and sang
unabashedly in places where anyone would listen.  She continued crooning through
high school musicals, community theatre and summer stock.

A newly formed theatre/dance program at Trinity College provided the perfect laboratory for exploring the
relationship between movement and text.  Karen graduated from Trinity College (1984) with a dual degree in
English and Theatre/Dance, several speaking awards and a directing prize.

The Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion provided a Jewish incubator for her evolving performance
art pieces.  Upon investiture (1990), Karen moved with her family literally all over the map and served as a
Cantor to small and large congregations in four corners of the US and Canada.

She has utilized performance art in synagogues, prison chaplaincy, and pastoral education.

In NEPA, Karen has come home, (literally and figuratively) returning to her first love, theatre. She performs/has
performed at the Providence Playhouse, The Northeast Theatre, and in local synagogues and parks.

Karen continues to seek opportunities to act, sing, direct, share poems and assemble‘found art’ pieces in
addition to raising Zeev and Ivy.
